Free your PC from clutter
(NC)-For many, spring ushers in a compulsive need to clean, and even the most disorderly often enjoy the prospect of a renewed, fresh start to the season. But, while sorting through all the clutter at home and at the office, many overlook one of the most essential items on the cleaning list: their PC. Here are five tips on how to refresh your computer and ensure that it's working efficiently through the four seasons:
. Remove unnecessary icons
Don't let program icons and file folders prevent you from enjoying your desktop wallpaper of Aunt Mildred. Many icons and folders that sit on the desktop are not often used and can slow down the start up process of the PC. To avoid any lagging, and just for plain neatness sake, remove any applications, files and folders that aren't used daily.
. Delete old program and files
Too much junk in the trunk? Consider removing any unused programs that fill up your hard drive and slow down your computer. To ensure the applications are completely removed, use the Add/Remove feature to uninstall. Also search and delete files that haven't been modified in the last six months to a year. Don't let that pack rat habit riddle your PC.
. Back-up your computer
If the thought of losing critical data, personal information or photos of Aunt Mildred keeps you up at night, get proactive and install software that will make backing up your assets a cinch. Today consumers have a breadth of software options and you don't have to be a tech wizard to install and use them. Luckily most tools, like Norton 360, walk users through the what, where and when of its back-up system. Now it doesn't get easier than that - so no more excuses.
. Ensure anti-virus software is up-to-date
Your computer is a constant target for viruses. The best solution to ward off unwanted attacks is reliable anti-virus software that quickly detects and removes pesky intruders. Old anti-virus software can also compromise your PC, so be sure to keep the bug police up-to-date. Nowadays solutions like Norton 360 offer solid security features like a smart firewall and phishing protection to guard things like credit card or banking information.
