(Toronto, ON, December 2, 2009) – ABC CANADA Literacy Foundation is challenging Canadian families to write, learn and win together by writing a 250-word original story to enter the Munsch at Home Contest - where one lucky family will win a private home visit from Robert Munsch, best-selling author and honorary chair of Family Literacy Day®. Families have only ten more days to submit their story at www.FamilyLiteracyDay.ca . (Contest closes at 5 p.m. EST on December 11, 2009.) “So far, we’ve received many fun and creative stories written by families across Canada,” says Margaret Eaton, President, ABC CANADA Literacy Foundation. “Writing together is a great family learning activity because it not only improves the child’s literacy skills, but the adult’s as well. It also boosts bonding between parent and child, and bolsters vocabulary skills and creativity.” Robert Munsch will attend the winning family’s home in January 2010 for a personal reading of their story, and a public reading at a local public library, school or literacy organization of the winner’s choice. The winning story will also be published online and in a national magazine, along with an illustration created by renowned artist Michael Martchenko. Mr. Munsch will choose the winning story from a selection of top five finalists, and announce the winner on December 16, 2009, during a live teleconference. The Munsch at Home Contest is part of national celebrations to encourage Canadians to participate in Family Literacy Day on January 27, 2010. Family Literacy Day is an annual initiative developed by ABC CANADA Literacy Foundation and Honda Canada to celebrate parents and children reading and learning together and to encourage Canadians to spend at least 15 minutes enjoying a learning activity every day. Thousands of Canadians across the country participate in this initiative with their families, and in their communities every year. To enter the Munsch at Home Contest, please visit www.FamilyLiteracyDay.ca for contest rules and regulations. To be considered, applications must be received by ABC CANADA by 5 p.m. EST on December 11, 2009. -30-
